A Lifetime of Service to Newport News
Born and raised in the historically segregated southeast community of Newport News, Howard Gwynn’s early life was intertwined with a city undergoing significant social change. His upbringing instilled in him the values of hard work and resilience, which propelled him to graduate as valedictorian from Carver High School in Newport News. Howard attended Dartmouth College and then the University of Michigan, where he earned his law degree.
Returning to his roots, Howard dedicated his career to serving Newport News. Starting as an assistant prosecutor, he spent eight years building a career defined by justice and integrity before being elected Commonwealth’s Attorney in 1990. Now, Howard leads a team of over 75 professionals, working to uphold the law, support crime survivors, and enhance community safety.
Under Howard’s leadership, the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office has excelled in prosecuting crimes and supporting victims while pioneering initiatives like drug treatment courts and behavioral health dockets. Howard and his wife Vickie raised their two daughters right here in Newport News, and they recognize that all families deserve to live in safe neighborhoods.
As he seeks re-election, Howard remains focused on advancing justice, promoting safety, and ensuring Newport News continues to thrive under his trusted leadership.
