Newport News Police Association Endorses Gwynn

I’ve known Howard Gwynn since I was in college, and he’s always given all of himself to Newport News. He loves this city and the people working and living here.

In working with him now in my role as Vice-Mayor, I’ve come to know that justice isn’t achieved just when an arrest is made. We must have experience and knowledge leading the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office to ensure fair outcomes for those cases, and for the people of our City. That’s exactly why I support Howard for re-election as Commonwealth’s Attorney.

As a former Deputy Sheriff, I had a front-row seat to see Howard and his team delivering justice in Court. And having known Howard for many years, I know he is a man of great integrity, who sacrifices for our City every day.

When I know someone like Howard Gwynn is leading in my City, I feel comfortable raising my family here, with my son in school here, and with my wife going to work here. And that is why I support Howard Gwynn for re-election as Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney.

Experience matters. And Howard Gwynn has been fighting for justice and community safety as Commonwealth’s Attorney for over thirty years. His office has prosecuted some of the most complex and challenging cases in the Commonwealth, and he continues to lead in those efforts everyday.

But more importantly, I know Howard is a man of integrity and strives to do the right thing for the people of Newport News. That's why I wholeheartedly support Howard for re-election as our Commonwealth's Attorney and I encourage you to do the same.

Since I first ran for Commissioner of the Revenue, Howard has been a constant support, listening ear, and voice of wisdom. Howard is an inspiration and mentor to so many, and even after my election, Howard has taken the time to engage with my office and support our work.

Howard loves Newport News, and he has my full support for re-election as Commonwealth’s Attorney.

As the former Managing Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia’s (EDVA) Norfolk Division, I got to know Howard Gwynn in his capacity as a board member on EDVA’s Project Safe Neighborhoods grant committee. Over the course of four years, it became evident that Howard is passionate about the work he does, that he is committed to restoring public trust in the criminal justice system, and that he is a proven leader.

For nearly 35 years he has expertly led the Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office, and the city is fortunate to have such an extraordinary leader committed to its public safety.

"Howard's collaboration with federal law enforcement partners has been extraordinary. In every case, he's focused entirely on justice: where and how justice would be best served for the victims and the community. Together we have prosecuted murderers, robbers, gun traffickers, interstate drug dealers, fraudsters, and those who prey on children. I believe our joint efforts have made Newport News safer.

I've personally long admired Howard's common-sense approach to criminal prosecution. He advocates for victims but treats every defendant as an individual, extending grace and second chances when appropriate, but also arguing for significant punishment when needed. These values have been imbued in all of your staff that I've known."

I'm proud to endorse my friend, comrade, and advisor in the battle for public safety. If you don't remember anything else, remember this: experience matters. When you need someone who can go to court, and know what they're doing in court, experience matters. When you need someone who understands your citizens who sit on your juries, experience matters.

Howard has the grit, the experience, the integrity and the love for the people of Newport News. I'm proud to endorse him for re-election as Newport News Commonwealth's Attorney.

In my life and my twenty-eight years as a prosecutor, I have been lucky enough to know people who truly define the term hero and Howard Gwynn is one of the them. Howard understands that the job of the Commonwealth’s Attorney means we represent every member of our community, those who are victims of crime, those who commit the crimes, those who speak loudly, those who speak softly, and those who don’t feel like they have the strength or power to speak at all.

Newport News has been served by one of the best and should not let him go.
